David Copperfield plays at the Hollywood theatre at the MGM whenever he is in town, and he offers a great show. He is one of the best-known magicians in the world with an astounding reputation for amazing his audiences. He has built up his name by doing unbelievable illusions, such as making the Statue of Liberty disappear. And while he can’t bring gigantic illusions like that to this stage, he does perform other feats that seem impossible, right in front of our eyes.

Copperfield does a great job at establishing a good rapport with the audience right away. He has a wonderful charisma and style onstage that could only have been honed through years of hard work and stage time. The relaxed easiness of his personality sets the crowd up for a terrific night of magic. It additionally struck me that I never realized how funny Copperfield is. His comedy and sense of humor are great.

David Copperfield is a prop magician---which means that, for the most part, the mechanism for the trick is contained within the illusion itself, rather then accomplished through the use of sleight-of-hand. The prop magician sells the trick instead of doing the trick. Because of this, I’ve always had a tougher time enjoying prop magicians because there seems to be less "Magic." With Copperfield, however, I have taken a whole new view of prop magicians. There are certainly reasons why he has achieved his notoriety. He was great, and even though, on many occasions, I knew the basics of how a trick was accomplished, Copperfield made it surprisingly unique, fresh and a joy to watch.

Magicians in this town could learn a lot from Copperfield. His show is put together extremely well. He is an amazing performer.

The show is helped, of course, by the wonderful support around him. The technicians and assistants are all top-notch, and the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM is one of the best facilities in town for a headliner. The show looked good and sounded good.

David Copperfield continues to show us why he is one of the top and most respected magicians out there. He is still one of the best. Whatever that indefinable "it" is--- David Copperfield has it and has never lost it. He has all of the charm, charisma, and personality that he ever did. He has the capacity to amaze and astound us. See him if you can.

Hip-nosis: You won’t believe your eyes

"Hip-nosis: Playing with your Head" is one of the best hypnosis genre shows ever seen. Tranz does a good job with both the audience and the volunteers, and it is because of his charisma that the show works. The show, staring Justin Tranz is playing at the comedy theatre inside O’Shea’s Hotel and Casino. It is a hypnosis show that is very fun and amusing...once it finally gets started, but then, however, the show moves very quickly through a hilarious series of hypnosis induced antics, and the volunteers seem to be "put under" more quickly and deeply than in other shows that I’ve seen of this sort.

Hypnosis shows, in general, are always a bit uncomfortable for me...laughing at people doing crazy things that seem beyond their control. Maybe it’s a lack of understanding, or a stunned awe that someone could be so completely manipulated. I understand that we oftentimes live in a sheep-like society and believe whatever we are told, but I don’t like the idea of giving up that much control over one’s own free will and entering into a puppet/master relationship…On the other hand, Tranz is only working with willing participants, and they get exactly what they are asking for. So as long as it’s not happening to me and everyone is up there of their own volition, I can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Before the show actually starts, the audience is shown a couple of video clips--something to amuse us, and something to tell us a bit about Tranz, himself. The clip from "There’s Something about Mary" is certainly amusing, but doesn’t really enhance or advance the evening in any capacity. The next clip showing us Tranz’ two million dollar home, shows us that he has been successful, but again, doesn’t really enhance the evening.

The success of any hypnosis show depends on the number and the quality of the volunteers. A big testament to Tranz is that even with a less than full audience, he had the stage lined with volunteers. With the volunteers in place (and me safely in my seat) I was able to set aside any personal bias and just enjoy the show.

The comedy theatre at O’Shea’s is small and a little dingy, but actually a nice space. Most people don’t realize that there is even a showroom at O’Shea’s, and I marveled at its under use and thought of several shows that are looking for a venue. Tranz’ show worked well in the intimate theatre and the audience could really feel involved with the show.
